Fire Pit Safety

Fire Pit Safety

Since summer is right around the corner, many of us will try to be outside as much as possible. Warm days lead to warm nights which are great for a get together. Some get togethers or parties happen outside around a fire-pit. A great outdoor space for entertaining and even fire pits can be a great selling part of many houses. Although fire pits are wonderful to have, proper safety must be always be observed.

Proper placement of your fire pit is very important for safety purposes. Make sure your fire pit sits on a level area of non-combustible stones or brick. Have the fire pit at least 15 feet away from branches and 10 feet away from property line, any fences or decks. Adult supervision should be in place at all times.

Start your fire slowly and build it up, never use accelerants. Wear fire safe gloves when adjusting wood, poking the fire or putting on new wood. In terms of fuel, there are a few you could use. The most common is wood. Use dry wood only. If you are hosting a party and interested in grilling, you can also use charcoal in your fire pit. Charcoal burns well and gets really hot. It is also great for cooking. If your fire pit is a bit “fancier”, propane and natural gas can be used to fuel it. You should check the hose and connections for leaks regularly. Another interesting fuel type is manufactured wood. These offer a controlled safe burn and are generally more eco-friendly.

Always use the mesh spark screen provided with your fire pit. This keeps embers contained. Also, don’t overfill your fire pit. A good rule is to keep it around 70 percent filled. When finished with the fire, douse the ashes with water and use a shovel to flip or stir ashes. Repeat these steps a few times to ensure no embers are left burning. Also always observe proper codes for having a fire pit. Some cities have regulations regarding the times you are allowed to have a fire burning.
